Veterans Food Drive door-to-door collections a scam, organizers say
Organizers say they have received multiple reports of money being collected for fake event
Calgary residents are being warned about a scam involving the Veterans Food Drive.
Organizers with the Canadian Legacy Project, which runs the annual food drive, said they have received multiple reports of a canvasser collecting funds for the cause in the Panorama Hills area.
However, the organization said it does not solicit door-to-door for food donations and the fraudulent collections are extremely upsetting.
"When people are going to trying to collect money fraudulently, they're stealing money from veterans that are in poverty," said Canadian Legacy Project president David Howard.
Howard said anyone who is solicited for donations should contact the Calgary police.
According to the Canadian Legacy Project's website, Calgarians wishing to make a food donation can drop off donations at the Crown Surplus in Inglewood or arrange for donation pick-ups through the Calgary Poppy Fund by calling 403-265-6304.
Cash donations can also be made through PayPal or major credit cards on the organization's website.
