Weather warning remains in place for Alberta highway as snow blankets mountain region
Snow expected to taper off Tuesday night
Snow continues to fall along Alberta's Highway 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper, a stretch known as the Icefields Parkway.
A weather warning, initially issued on Sunday afternoon, remains in place for the mountain highway running north of the Trans-Canada Highway through Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. Wet snow is expected to continue with total amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres.
"Snow levels currently near valley bottom are expected to rise to by morning," read the warning on the Environment Canada website.
"Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow."
WATCH | Jasper gets a wallop of winter in June:
Jasper National Park tweeted that travel is not recommended on the Icefields Parkway and that Maligne Road and Miette Road are closed because of heavy, wet snow and downed trees.
The snow is expected to taper off Tuesday night.
The weather agency said people should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.
