Woman arrested after fatal hit-and-run crash
Driver fled after pedestrian killed on 17th Avenue S.E. early Wednesday
A woman is in custody after a man was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Wednesday morning in southeast Calgary.
An eastbound Ford Escape struck the pedestrian in a crosswalk at the 3100 block of 17th Avenue S.E. at about 2:30 a.m. MT.
Police say the driver fled the scene and the victim, a 26-year-old man, died at the scene.
Officers found the suspect’s abandoned vehicle, registered to an owner in Chestermere, a short distance away.
Chestermere RCMP took a 40-year-old woman into custody as she returned to her home in the town east of Calgary at 4:30 a.m. MT.
She will likely be charged with hit and run causing death and careless driving, said Sgt. Colin Foster, an investigator with the collision reconstruction unit.
He said police are grateful to two sharp-eyed witnesses who jotted down the licence plate number of the SUV before it drove away.
“So again, we have to thank the public as much as we can for the help they have provided us.”
A witness also reported that the suspect smelled of alcohol, but it’s unlikely police will pursue charges related to that, Foster said.
“My investigator at the scene says there’s insufficient evidence to follow that any further,” he said.
