Dangerous dog lost in Yamnuska area west of Calgary prompts warning from Alberta Parks

Alberta Parks' animal warnings are usually related to wildlife — bears, cougars and the like — but an advisory issued over the weekend urges hikers to be on the lookout for a dangerous dog.

Alberta Parks' animal warnings are usually related to wildlife — typically bears, sometimes cougars and even, one time, a grouse — but an advisory issued over the weekend urges hikers to be on the lookout for a dangerous dog.

The domestic animal, a 64-kilogram great Dane-black lab cross that has been declared a vicious dog by the City of Calgary, was lost on the east end of the Yamnuska traverse on Saturday, according a warning posted Sunday.

The warning is in effect for the Yamnuska Trail and day use area.

Anyone in the vicinity is advised to be on the lookout for the large pet, and not approach it or call to it if they see it.

Dog owners are also advised to keep their own pets on leash when hiking in the area and to carry bear spray, keep it accessible and know how to use it.

Alberta Parks asks than any sightings of the dangerous dog be reported immediately to Kananaskis dispatch at 403-591-7755 or the Canmore RCMP at 403-678-5516.

Mount Yamnuska is about 80 kilometres west of Calgary.
