Driver dead after semi-trailer slams into train in northern Alberta

A semi-trailer truck slammed into the side of a northbound CN freight train near Nampa, Alta., early this morning.

Crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. at a Highway 2 crossing south of Peace River

A semi-trailer truck slammed into the side of a westbound CN freight train near Nampa, Alta., early this morning.

The truck driver died. The train crew wasn't injured.

Eleven empty oil-tankers went off the tracks.

The crash and derailment happened at 1:19 a.m. at a crossing on Highway 2, about 460 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. The truck, loaded with grain, was headed south on the highway at the time.

CN Rail, the RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate.

Police said initial information indicates the rail crossing lights were functioning properly.

A section of the highway was closed after the crash and traffic was re-routed.
