A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday night after being stabbed at an LRT station in downtown Edmonton, police say.

Officers had arrested five people — three youths and two adults — at the MacEwan LRT station that night, after finding the boy's body there while responding to reports of an assault involving multiple people, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said Thursday.

In a news release issued Friday, police said an autopsy confirmed the teen's cause of death was a stab wound and he is a homicide victim.

The boy was part of a group of four youths and an 18-year-old man. They reportedly assaulted a man, 34, and a woman, 32, at the LRT station behind Rogers Place, police said.

The group and the pair of adults did not know each other, police said.

Four people — a 15-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl, 14-year-old boy and the 18-year-old man — have each been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possessing an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, police said.

An EPS spokesperson told CBC News the fifth person who was arrested, another adult, was not charged.

Homicide detectives are still investigating the case. The spokesperson said EPS will likely issue an update once the investigation is finished.

The Metro Line LRT was shut down for several hours Thursday morning between the Churchill and NAIT stations, while police investigated the case.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. People can also submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.
