Edmonton restaurant caught delivering booze in pizza boxes

A pizza joint on 118th Avenue was shut down for a day recently after police found out the boxes going out the back door contained alcohol, hold the anchovies.

The investigation began over the summer, when northwest beat officers were tipped off that an unlicensed restaurant was selling alcohol after hours, said Sgt. Curtis Hoople.

Police executed a search warrant in September and found what Hoople called "a substantial amount of alcohol" inside pizza boxes, in pre-packaged brown paper bags and inside delivery vehicles.

The booze was being sold inside the restaurant, he said, and was also available for delivery.

A total of 240 cans of beer and 100 bottles of various spirits were seized.

Investigators issued a provincial summons under the Gaming and Liquor Act to four employees of the restaurant, on 118th Avenue and 97 Street.

It was shut down for one day.
