Elf on the Shelf: Helpful tool for parents or something more sinister?

With the holiday season just around the corner, we want to know what, if anything, you do to encourage good behaviour by the kids in your life.
According to the book and DVD that comes with newer versions of the Elf on the Shelf, each night the elf flies back to the North Pole where he or she reports to Santa. (CBC)

Parents have long warned misbehaving children of what might await them when they open their stocking on Christmas morning.

In the past few years, the ante has been upped as more and more households have brought in 'Elf on the Shelf' — a magical creature that moves around each night, assigned by Santa to watch over the home and ensure kids stay on the right side of that all-important naughty or nice scale.

During Monday's episode of Radio Active, we asked what you think of relying on Santa and Elf on the Shelf — and the promise of presents — to help encourage children's good behaviour.

Should they be used to keep kids in line? How do you handle the issue in your household?
