Family of missing Edmonton woman hosts walk to raise awareness
Shelly Tanis Dene, 26, was first reported missing on Nov. 8, 2013
The family of a missing Edmonton woman who was last seen by her family in August 2013 held a walk to raise awareness of her disappearance.
Dozens of people wore light blue t-shirts — the same colour she wore to her high school graduation — in honour of 26-year-old Shelly Tanis Dene.
Dene was reported missing by a family member on Nov. 8, 2013. She was living in Edmonton at the time of her disappearance and hadn’t contacted her family since August. The Edmonton Police Missing Persons Unit is searching for her.
The family decided to host the walk in the hopes that they could raise awareness about Dene’s disappearance, and someone would come forward with new information.
“There’s always somebody that sees a person last,” said Dene’s sister Candice Lhommecourt. “We want to know who that is and we want to know what happened to my sister.
The walk began at Churchill Square Saturday afternoon, and included speeches, traditional smudge and prayer ceremonies. Aboriginal drummers and singers performed while the participants walked.
“We have so many questions and no answers,” said Lhommecourt. “We just want new leads and someone to come forward… with some information about my sister.”
Dene is described as being aboriginal, five-foot-seven, weighing 111 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.
