Measles case confirmed in Edmonton
Health officials have confirmed a case of measles in Edmonton and Alberta Health Services is asking people who may have been exposed to keep an eye out for symptoms.
Measles symptoms
Measles is an extremely contagious disease that can be spread through coughing, sneezing and touching infected surfaces. Alberta Health Services is asking people who may have been exposed to watch out for these symptoms:
• Fever of 38.3° C or higher.
• Cough, runny nose and/or red eyes.
• A blotchy red rash that appears three to seven days after fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs.
AHS says people may have been exposed last month at two west Edmonton businesses. It's asking anyone who visited West End Registries on 170th Street on March 25 or 26 to watch for symptoms of the disease.
They are also warning people who visited the Callingwood Safeway store on 178th Street on the evening of March 25 that they may also have been exposed.
Anyone who does notice symptoms, which include fever, coughing, runny nose and a splotchy red rash, should contact Health Link Alberta by phone before visiting a clinic to stop the spread of the disease.
Health officials say those who have never had disease before and who are not vaccinated are at risk.
40 cases of measles were reported in southern Alberta in November of last year. More recently, health officials in Calgary have confirmed two new cases of the disease there Wednesday.
