Phil Wilson's YEG Pizza Odyssey is a slice of heaven
Reviewer and food blogger Phil Wilson hopes to review 30 pizza joints by the end of his pizza odyssey
Any way you slice it, Edmonton food blogger Phil Wilson's YEG Pizza Odyssey is the stuff of dreams for many.
Building upon the model he used last year to find Edmonton's best hamburger, Wilson is trying out pizza joints two-by-two. This week, it's Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria vs. PiccoLino Bistro.
"When [I] put it all together at the end, I will pick a winner between the two pizzas that go head-to-head every week," he said.
His hope is to find a great pizza being served up at some hidden gem — a place he has never heard of or been to.
"I wanted this to be the widest search that's ever been done and not just 'here's the one that I go for all the time so it's automatically the best.'"
Each pie is rated on three qualities: crust, sauce and toppings.
Thin and thick-crust pizzas are being judged separately, and while he had to preference at the outset, now Wilson says "the more I eat, I think I'm getting sick of the thicker crust ones faster."
For now, Cafe Leva on 110th Street and 86th Avenue is winning, but there are still plenty of places for Wilson to try out — including several out-of-town joints that he jokes about setting up a Kickstarter campaign to help get to.
In the end, Wilson hopes to review about 30 pizza places before announcing his final winners.
Wilson's reviews and Pizza Odyssey leader board can be found at his blog and on Twitter.
