Police shot a person in the parking lot of an RCMP detachment outside Edmonton Monday after they were spotted with what appeared to be a firearm.

RCMP said an incident at the detachment in Sherwood Park, Alta., resulted in at least one officer firing shots.

Alberta Health Services says an adult was taken to hospital in serious condition.

It wasn't immediately clear why the person was in the RCMP parking lot.

RCMP said an internal review will look at training, policy, police response and the officer's duty status.

Alberta's independent police watchdog will investigate the shooting.
