Truck hauling logging equipment damages 34th Street overpass on Sherwood Park Freeway
Overpass 'remains closed indefinitely,' RCMP said in update Tuesday afternoon

Update: On Wednesday, March 5, Strathcona County RCMP said 34th Street and the westbound lanes of the Sherwood Park Freeway are open to traffic. The speed limit on 34th Street has been reduced to 30 km/h.
A large piece of logging equipment being hauled on a tractor-trailer struck the 34th Street overpass on the Sherwood Park Freeway late Monday, resulting in traffic headaches during the Tuesday morning commute.
As of Tuesday morning, the northbound and southbound lanes of the 34th Street overpass were closed, and westbound traffic on the Sherwood Park Freeway was being diverted using access ramps to and from 34th Street.
Eastbound lanes of the Sherwood Park Freeway were not affected, but police were still asking drivers to avoid the area and take alternate routes.
Investigators were on scene assessing damage to the overpass.
In a news release Tuesday morning, Strathcona County RCMP said the incident resulted in "extensive damage" to the overpass.
In an update later Tuesday, RCMP said the overpass "remains closed indefinitely."
An engineer from the firm Volker Stevin attended the scene to assess the damage, police added.
Photos from the scene show damage to concrete and rebar on the underside of the overpass deck, and hundreds of small pieces of concrete strewn over the freeway's westbound lanes.

Investigators were on scene Tuesday assessing the damage.
It's not yet known when the closed freeway lanes, or the overpass, might reopen.
No injuries were reported.
