Two Edmonton-area daycare workers have been charged with physical assaults against three young children in their care.

RCMP said Tuesday that 32-year-old Dimpy Bawa and 29-year-old Shivani Shivani were arrested after an investigation into alleged assaults at a daycare in Spruce Grove, Alta., just west of Edmonton.

The children involved are between the ages of one and three years old, according to an RCMP spokesperson.

Alberta's list of registered child care programs shows that the facility is known as the Little Stars Montessori Early Learning Center, with a capacity of 78 children.

The daycare has been co-operating with investigators, RCMP said.

Shivani is facing two counts of assault, while Dawa has been charged with two counts of assault and two counts of assault with a weapon. The alleged incidents took place over roughly a week in March.

The two women are both due in court in Stony Plain, Alta., on Sept. 17.

RCMP said in a statement that both were "released" from the daycare when the investigation began five months ago. After an initial complaint at the time, police identified four potential victims, but the charges laid this week are related to three children.

Earlier this summer, RCMP charged a 21-year-old daycare worker at Emerald Park Daycare in Sherwood Park, Alta., with five counts of assault.

RCMP said the ages of the children in that case range from five to eight years old.
