After an icy, wet night night across much of Alberta, a spring snow storm is expected to hit central and northern parts of  the province Thursday morning.

After a wet dusting of snow overnight, the storm is expected to pick up and turn melting roads white.

As of Thursday morning, snowfall warnings were in effect for dozens of communities across the province from Athabasca in the north to Banff in the south.

According to Environment Canada, a long period of snowfall is expected to begin Thursday with amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres expected.

Snow will intensify Thursday morning and continue to be heavy throughout the evening as temperatures drop.

Some areas are expected to receive as much as 30 centimetres by Friday morning before the storm tapers off.

In Edmonton, up to 20 centimetres is expected to fall by Friday morning.

Environment Canada urged drivers to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

The snow is expected to fall in narrow bands that will make regional conditions unpredictable and visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
