A St. Albert woman is urging  residents to show support for the RCMP and the families of the two officers shot on the weekend by posting white ribbons.

"You can’t heal a hurt like this. And it's a really nice way for people to show their support for the families and the RCMP," said Tara McCormick.

White ribbons represent community support and symbolize safety, light and purity, she said.

She and friend Deb Raymond dubbed the campaign United in Light.

“The community of St. Albert was already putting their porch lights on,” McCormick said. “We thought United in Light was a good catch phrase.”

About 30 people answered the call to help assemble ribbons Monday night, she said.

“It was really heartwarming this morning on my way to work here seeing a bunch of the ribbons out already.”

Const. David Wynn and Auxilary Const, Derek Bond were both shot early Saturday while trying to arrest a suspect at a St. Albert casino.

Bond is recovering at home while Wynn is not expected to survive.

Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan said she and her officers appreciate the show of support.

"It helps our members to put their uniform back on every day and go out to protect the public,” she said.
