Woman shot, killed by Edmonton police
A woman is dead after being shot by Edmonton police during a standoff Saturday afternoon.
Two officers responded to a 911 call just after 2 p.m. MT at a residence near 119 Avenue and 84 Street.
When the officers arrived, they found a woman armed with a handgun.
Police say an officer with substantial experience on the force shot the suspect after the woman pointed the weapon at him.
The woman was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
Tony Simioni, president of the Edmonton Police Association, said the actions of the officer were justified.
"He is a senior member [with] a lot of experience and he is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances," he said.
"It's never pleasant to go through this — this isn't what we sign up for. However, having said that, we are quite confident he did what he was trained to do."
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation.
The woman's name has not been released.
