Guess Who closes Pan Am Games
The Guess Who got back together in Winnipeg, the band that rose to international fame in the 1960s and had a string of hits before breaking up in the mid 70s. On Sunday night all four members reunited for the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games.
Gary Peterson, Jim Kale, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings decided to reunite after receiving a personal letter from Manitoba Premier Gary Filmon asking them to perform at the games.
Randy Bachman plays lead guitar. He says getting back together is like riding a bike.
"It's so understood that we all instinctively relax, because we know what each other is going to play. We're still playing it. Nobody had to come out of retirement from selling shoes. We've all been playing this music for decades. So we all just showed up and played it."
It's been reported the Guess Who are being paid $200,000 to perform. But vocalist Burton Cummings says that's not why the group reunited.
"Money was never an issue not for one second. You know, it's nice to get paid, but that's not why we're here. Good Lord. This is Winnipeg man, you know, this is the Guess Who playing in Winnipeg again. The original four guys."
Cummings says there is a lot of interest in the band doing some gigs in the rest of Canada and in the U.S. No decision has been made about the future, though. He says the prime focus right now is on their performance in front of their hometown fans.
