60-year-old Dundas man charged with driving an e-bike while impaired

A Dundas man has been arrested after police say they received a call about a man driving erratically on an e-bike.

At about 7:30 p.m. on June 17th Hamilton policed were called to the area of York Road and Olympic Drive in Dundas.

Police stopped the 60-year-old Dundas resident, who showed signs of impairment, and took him to the police station for a breathalyzer test. The man blew over two times the legal limit.

The man was released on a Promise to Appear with a charge of impaired driving and Over 80mg.

This is the third charge laid against e-bike drivers in Hamilton in the last month.

Hamilton Police Media Relations Officer PC Debbie McGreal-Dinnings says she can’t provide the exact number of people in Hamilton that have been charged for riding e-bikes while impaired. She did advise that while e-bikes do not require a license to operate, they are considered a motor vehicle while not being operated solely with their pedals.

McGreal-Dinnings says that anyone found operating a motorized vehicle while impaired, including a car, wheelchair, or an e-bike, can be charged under the criminal code of Canada.
