Mayor Andrea Horwath in hospital after fall down stairs during 'extremely windy conditions,' city says

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath is in hospital, the city said, after "a fall on the stairs outside City Hall during extremely windy conditions."

The mayor's office said Wednesday morning in a media release that Horwath is currently undergoing surgery for a broken wrist "and is being assessed for additional injuries including an elbow fracture and leg injury."

Horwath's spokesperson Amanda Kinnaird said the mayor will "be resting and recovering at home for the remainder of the week."

"We are grateful for the community's outpouring of concern and well wishes and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available," Kinnaird said.

Mayor Horwath "remains in good spirits and is in regular communication with her team," said the office Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, she had posted on social media, congratulating Liberal leader Mark Carney and local federal candidates on the election results. 

"Thank you to all candidates who put their names forward," she wrote. "I look forward to working with our federal partners on shared priorities — from housing and transit to economic growth and community well-being and safety."

Horwath has been Hamilton's mayor since October 2022. She previously represented Hamilton Centre as an MPP and was the leader of Ontario's New Democratic Party.
