The 99th Boxing Day Run puts a spring in Hamilton's step

While some Hamiltonians were cashing in on Boxing Day deals at the mall, hundreds of runners and walkers commandeered a few of the city's downtown streets for an almost 100-year-old race.

The Boxing Day Run is hosted annually by the Hamilton Harriers, a local running and walking club based out of the downtown YMCA at the corner of James Street and Jackson Street.

This year marked the 99th time the race has taken place.

Next year will mark a centenary.

Family members, friends and other curious spectators stood on the sidelines to cheer on and encourage the runners. A few onlookers gave off the impression they wanted to join the race.

A total of $3,000 was divided between the winners and runner-ups of two different races, including a shorter route and a longer one.

As contestants approached the finish line, some vocalized their mounting exhaustion. A mother cheered on her daughter, who shouted back to her, "I'm tired!"

But it was all well worth it when contestants reached the finish line and received a medal, blanket and water bottle — and the assurance that the race benefits a good cause.

Every year, organizers of the race say they donate a total of $5,000 to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which helps local children participate in and benefit from programs such as fitness, daycare and camping.
