Two people are recovering, police say, after a double shooting in downtown Hamilton overnight.

Police say they were called to the area of Market Street and Hess Street South around midnight after getting reports of gunfire.

Officers "flooded the area," said Const. Lorraine Edwards, but anyone nearby scattered.

Then, a short time later, a call came in about two people walking in the area of York Boulevard who matched the description of people who were involved in the incident, Edwards said.

A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were both arrested and now face "numerous firearm-related charges," she said.

Though arrests had been made, the investigating officers hadn't yet tracked down any victims — until they got another emergency call not long after from a person saying his friend had been shot.

Emergency crews rushed to the area of Jackson and Hess Streets, and found a teen who had collapsed and another injured male.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and underwent emergency surgery.

"We've not been able to speak with him due to medical concerns," Edwards said.

A 19-year-old man was also treated in hospital and subsequently released.

Police say they have recovered a gun linked to the incident, but investigators don't yet know what caused it.

"We have no motive or understanding of what happened here," Edwards said.
