Freezing rain possible for Burlington, Ont., this weekend, Environment Canada says
Agency warns of slippery surfaces and broken tree branches from ice build-up

There's a possibility of freezing rain in Burlington, Ont., on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning, Environment Canada says.
In a special weather statement issued just before 7 a.m. on Friday, the agency said there is a risk of freezing rain tonight, possibly into Saturday morning, as temperatures will be near the freezing mark. A second round of freezing rain is expected Saturday night into Sunday as temperatures cool below the freezing mark.
The statement warns of possible ice accretion of three to five millimetres, possible utility outages, and slippery surfaces and broken tree branches from ice build-up.
"Freezing rain warnings are possible as the event draws nearer," the weather agency said.
Meanwhile, the City of Hamilton said crews are on standby "and ready to respond as needed." Freezing rain is possible in parts of Hamilton and the area is expecting showers for most of the weekend.
In a news release, the city asked residents to avoid non-essential travel and slow down while on the road.
"Given the weather could result in ice build-up, high winds and fallen branches or trees, residents are reminded to keep back from downed power lines and report them to emergency services immediately," the city said in the release.
There's also a risk of thunderstorm Friday evening and after midnight.
To avoid flooding, the city suggests residents clear up catch basins from debris, properly clean backwater valves, ensuring sump pumps are working properly, and consider removing valuables from basements if the house is prone to flooding.
