A Hamilton man and a woman face 10 charges for assaulting police officers after investigators found fentanyl and other illegal drugs during a traffic stop in the Gibson area, overnight Saturday.

Police found 0.9 grams of fentanyl, codeine and viagra, alongside "other evidence consistent with drug trafficking" in the vehicle.

Around 1:30 a.m., Hamilton police pulled over a black Mercedes on Barton Street near Wentworth Street North, "suspected of speeding and driving aggressively."

Police say the driver, Daniel Sombath Iem, provided a fake name and was placed under arrest.

But the 30-year-old, who investigators described as "assaultive" in a news release, evaded police custody and ran east along Barton Street.

When Hamilton police caught up with him, the release said officers tased Iem, who continued to punch and kick them.

Iem was charged with numerous drug tracking offences, proceeds of crime under $5,000, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and obstructing a police investigation.

The passenger, 32-year-old woman, was charged with drug trafficking and proceeds of crime under $5,000.
