Andrea Horwath will make a public statement Tuesday morning about a controversial proposed waterfront gasification plant.

The Ontario NDP leader will join Matthew Green, councillor for Ward 3, and Patti Encinas, chair of the Sherman Hub, at city hall at 10 a.m.

Both Horwath and city council have called on the Ministry of Environment to order full environmental assessment, or "bump up," on the Port Fuels project, which will use a trademarked technology called Gasplasma to process garbage into energy.

The city opposes the project, but it will go on Hamilton Port Authority land, which means the city likely has little say in its future.

Port Fuels has done studies as part of a less stringent environmental review called a screening. It is awaiting a provincial verdict on that process. City consultants say a bump up is unlikely.
