Hamilton police say three friends were walking down an icy path to the base of the waterfall. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, they determined there was too much ice to keep going, police say.

But when they turned around to go back up, one man slipped and slid on the ice before going over a drop. His friends say it looked to be about a 12-metre fall.

Police, fire and paramedics crews arrived right after midnight Saturday morning, and worked for an hour-and-a-half to rescue the man from the base of the falls.

They wrapped him in a blanket, packaged him in a basket and lifted him to the top, according to Hamilton Fire.

The man was conscious, and able to move his extremities, but he complained of head and chest pain, police said. The man was taken to hospital.

Crews were on scene until about 3 a.m.
