McMaster professor wins federal funding for bone research

Hamilton's Dr. Joy MacDermid at McMaster University will study how to better manage patients with wrist fractures.

McMaster University professor Dr. Joy MacDermid will receive more than two million dollars to study how to better manage patients with wrist fractures.

Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq made the announcement Thursday. It was one of three funding announcements made by the minister in Hamilton — all designed to support research that would find new ways to prevent or treat bone loss.

Other recipients include Dr. Michael Glogauer from the University of Toronto who will look for new ways to identify bone loss through gum disease, and Dr. Robert Young of Simon Fraser University who will research new drugs that could promote bone regeneration.

All three projects are to be funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. MacDermid's project aims to support people recovering from wrist fractures and assist them with recovery. She will receive $2,461,199 over five years.
