Walk off the Earth leads Hamilton area nominees for 2016 Juno Awards

The 2016 Juno nominations were announced Tuesday, and the Hamilton area had a good showing in a number of significant categories this year.

The 2016 Juno nominations were announced Tuesday, and the Hamilton area had a good showing in a number of significant categories this year.

Walk Off The Earth, Harrison Kennedy and Tom Wilson's Lee Harvey Osmond headlined a number of nominations given to Hamilton and Hamilton-area based bands for the Canadian music awards.

Burlington's Walk Off The Earth led the way with three nominations, including nods for group of the year, the Juno fan choice award and pop album of the year for "Sing It All Away."

Lee Harvey Osmond is nominated for Best Contemporary Roots album for the release "Beautiful Scars."

Kennedy is a five-time nominee. His album "This is from here" is nominated in the blues album category.

Whitehorse, formerly based in Hamilton, also has a nomination.

St. Catharines musician City and Colour, the alias for singer-songwriter Dallas Green, was also nominated for three Junos. He's nominated for artist of the year, producer of the year and song writer of the year for the songs Blood, Lover Come Back and Wasted Love from the album "If I Should Go Before You Leave."

Some other Hamilton acts up for awards include:

  • Whitehorse, Hamilton — Adult alternative album of the year
  • Daniel Romano, Welland — Adult alternative album of the year
  • The City Harmonic — Contemporary Christian Album 

Calgary will be hosting this year's Junos, which will be held at the Saddledome on Sunday, April 3. The 2015 edition was previously held at Hamilton's FirstOntario Centre, where the hometown group The Arkells took home the awards for rock album of the year and group of the year.

Ottawa will play host to the 2017 awards, and the 2018 show is rumoured to be held in Toronto, but Hamilton will be making an effort to host either the 2019 or 2020 awards, according to Tourism Hamilton Manager Susan Monarch.

The most nominations for this year's show, as expected, went to the Weeknd, Drake, Justin Bieber. The Weeknd got six noms, while Drake and Bieber each received five.
