Hamilton has 218 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 93 people have recovered as of Friday.

The number of cases has increased by 12 from the day before.

During the city's virtual update Thursday, chief medical officer of health Dr. Elizabeth Richardson said that at the time nearly half of those infected with the virus had recovered — but as of Friday's numbers, only 42 per cent of cases have been resolved.

In total, the city has had six deaths. The most recent one was an 88-year-old woman who had tested positive on April 6. The woman had underlying risk factors and died April 8 in hospital after a brief stay in the intensive care unit.

Richardson said the majority of cases have been transmitted through close contact of an infected person or community spread, including the most recent death.

Of the total cases, 31 have been hospitalized. Currently there are seven patients at St. Joseph's Health Hamilton and 12 at Hamilton Health Sciences.

People between the ages of 20 and 64 account for 143 of the cases.

Hamilton currently has three outbreaks in retirement and long-term care homes: Heritage Green Nursing Home, Cardinal Retirement Residence and Wentworth Lodge. No additional deaths have been reported in these facilities in the last 48 hours.

Long-term care and retirement home residents account for 25 of the city's COVID-19 cases.

An additional outbreak was confirmed earlier this week at St. Joseph's Special Care Nursery for premature babies, but all babies have tested negative at this time.

Richardson said that the number of tests being performed in Hamilton has dropped, but public health is looking into strategies to bring those numbers back up.

The city has performed 1,780 COVID-19 tests since the assessment centres opened on March 16.

Cases in nearby regions

Halton Region reported 285 confirmed and presumptive cases Friday morning, including 101 cases in Oakville and 54 in Burlington. Four deaths had been reported as of Wednesday.

The region also has six facility outbreaks in retirement and long-term care homes.

Niagara Public Health has confirmed 201 cases, 71 of which have been resolved as of Friday.

Brant Public Health has 60 positive cases with two facility outbreaks.
