A 27-year-old man has been arrested for a sexual assault that took place nearly a decade ago, Hamilton police say.

The man was 17 years old at the time and his identity will be protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police said in a news release Monday.

Police said the sexual assault took place at 3 a.m. on Aug. 14, 2015 near Quigley Road and Veevers Drive — east of the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

A 23-year-old woman was walking alone when "a man came up behind her and tried to pull her into a grassy area," CBC Hamilton reported in 2015.

On Monday, police said the woman managed to escape by kicking the suspect in the face with her boot.

Police collected DNA evidence from her boot, but there was no match until December 2021, they said.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the man on March 4.
