Hamilton police make arrest in January hit-and-run that killed man, 70, and his dog

Hamilton police say they arrested a 32-year-old Hamilton man six weeks after a hit-and-run in the Glenview West neighbourhood that killed a man and his dog.

Hamilton police say they arrested a 32-year-old Hamilton man, six weeks after a hit-and-run in the Glenview West neighbourhood that killed a man and his dog.

Police say a 70-year-old and his dog were believed to be crossing Lawrence Road near Cochrane Road in the city's east end on Jan. 30 at 8:30 p.m.

The driver of a Dodge Dakota pickup truck coming eastbound hit them both and fled the scene.

The dog died at the scene and police said the man died in hospital.

The man arrested is facing four charges:  

  • Fail to Stop Cause Death
  • Operation While Prohibited
  • Fail to Comply Probation
  • Fail to Comply Probation

The accused's bail was opposed, according to police.

The incident is among a string of others where drivers have hit pedestrians, prompting advocates to say the "urgent situation" of pedestrian safety needs to be addressed.
