Hamilton police say the 36-year-old man who died after being hurt at Janco Steel Ltd. on Tuesday was hit by a forklift, a collision that's considered a traffic fatality.

The incident marks the ninth time a pedestrian has been killed in a crash this year, according to investigators.

Police say first responders were called to the steel plant on Arvin Avenue in Stoney Creek at roughly 10:30 a.m.

An industrial forklift in the plant struck the man, according to police.

Hamilton Paramedic Service superintendent Dave Thompson told CBC Hamilton on Tuesday that the man had life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

He also said first responders tried to resuscitate the victim, but police say the man died of his injuries shortly after arriving at West Lincoln Hospital.

Police say members of the division two criminal investigation branch and collision reconstruction unit are assisting the Ministry of Labour, which is leading the workplace investigation.

Representatives for Janco Steel Ltd., which specializes in flat rolled steel products, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
