Hopping from the HSR to GO Transit will result in a free local fare starting Monday.

Metrolinx will now reimburse the cost of local connections for people using PRESTO on 12 transit providers, including in Hamilton and Burlington transit services.

Here's how it works:

An adult HSR rider who takes the bus to a GO Station, having paid for the trip using their PRESTO card, will automatically be reimbursed the $2.55 cost when they tap onto GO Transit.

For transit users in Burlington, a valid GO single-ride paper ticket or day pass will also work as proof, according to Metrolinx.

The 100 per cent co-fare discount is an increase from the previous 75 per cent deduction.

Metrolinx has also announced youth and post-secondary students who pay with PRESTO can get a 40 per cent discount.

Customers who are aged 13 to 19, or enrolled full-time at a post secondary institution regardless of age, are eligible.

The Crown agency said the initiatives are part of a wider effort to "better integrate transit across the GTHA."
