Winter storm brings Hamilton cancellations and closures, more snow on the way

A winter snow storm that dumped 20 to 30 centimetres of snow on Hamilton Monday and continues Tuesday has led to cancellations, closures and delays across the area.  

For the morning commute, snow is falling lightly, but roads remain snow covered and slushy. Many side streets have not been plowed as crews continue to try to catch up.

McMaster University is closed for the day, as is Mohawk College. In Niagara, Brock University and Niagara College are closed.

While children are already off school for March Break, both the Hamilton public and separate boards have closed all their buildings for the day. For both boards, that includes child care centres in the schools.

Pearson airport is reporting a number of delays.

Environment Canada says 20 to 30 cms of snow fell across the region Monday and is warning that another 7-14 cms are possible today and tonight. It warns dangerous driving conditions are expected to continue into the evening.

As of 8:30 a.m. it was -12C with a wind chill making it feel like -22C

Monday the worst of the storm hit the Hamilton area just in time for the afternoon commute, causing major delays on area highways and forcing GO transit to pull some busses off the roads, 

Hamilton road crews have been working through the night. The city advises its priority for sanding salting and plowing is main arteries and escarpment accesses. After those it moves on to collector roads and other feeder streets. Residential and other rural roads come after all that is taken care of

It is also asking people to avoid parking on the street where possible to aid with snow clearing. 

And it is reminding property owners or occupants to clear snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of the "snow event."

Hamilton says waste collection will go ahead as scheduled today and asks that people put their containers where the workers can safely access them.
