Police have identified the 62-year-old woman killed Monday in Hamilton as Jacquelyne "Jackie" Buckle, a long-time employee with the city of Hamilton, and said her son, 34-year-old Daryl Buckle, has been charged following her death.

She was "a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, co-worker and friend," her family said in a statement Tuesday.

Police say they arrested Daryl on first-degree murder charges after responding to "reports of a disturbance" just after 5 p.m. Monday at his downtown apartment.

Police vehicles could be seen outside of an apartment building at 42 Herkimer St. near Durand Park.

"There was an assault that started in the apartment and it ended in the hallway, and ultimately, she has died as a result of blunt force trauma," Hamilton police staff sergeant Sara Beck told reporters Tuesday.

Buckle was found "absent of vital signs," and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

Beck said Daryl remained at the scene and was cooperative when he was taken into custody. She said it is too early in the investigation to speculate about the motive or factors involved.

"Jackie... will be greatly missed by everyone that loved her," her family's statement said.

According to Buckle's LinkedIn profile, she was a city employee from 1980 to 2015. Police say Buckle worked in the tax department.

According to Daryl's social media accounts, he is a musician and worked as a music teacher for over a decade. His Facebook account said he studied music at McMaster University and was a Mohawk College graduate, class of 2011.

Daryl appeared at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Tuesday morning, Beck said.

Beck said Hamilton police as of Tuesday afternoon were still "holding the scene" while the forensics branch processes the apartment.

She said there are no other suspects.
