Help to prevent Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Health Canada has announced more help for people with fetal alcohol syndrome.

At an F-A-S conference in Winnipeg yesterday, it announced it's set up a new national advisory committee. It's supposed to give the government advice on preventing F-A-S, and dealing with people who have it.

As many as three people in every thousand are affected by fetal alcohol syndrome.

F-A-S is a kind of brain damage caused when mothers drink while they're pregnant. People who have it may seem perfectly normal.

But they can have problems understanding cause and effect. Or that actions have consequences. Because of that, many children born with FAS get in trouble with the law, but never understand why.
