Huyghebaert starts new job

Saskatchewan's newest MLA has taken his seat in the Legislature. Yogi Huyghebaert was welcomed by the Speaker Wednesday afternoon.

Huyghebaert won a convincing victory Monday in the Wood River byelection.

Members passed a special motion, allowing him to take his seat before the session adjourns. That's expected to happen tomorrow.

Deteriorating highways was a big issue in the byelection. And that's what was on the new Saskatchewan Party MLA's mind, when he asked his first question.

"Mr. Premier, when are you going to live up to your responsibility and give our highways the attention they deserve and require?" Huyghebaert asked.

"This government has made a commitment to the highways," Roy Romanow replied. "But I also want to conclude with this quotation from a Star-Phoenix editorial today:

"'Any voter who believes that turfing out the current government will overnight get all the highways magically paved is practicing a form of self delusion not seen since the heady days of Grant Devine.'"

Romanow congratulated Huyghebaert on his victory. The Premier then predicted he would never make it to the government benches.
