Today marks exactly one year of the tailings pond breach at Mount Polley

The 2014 breach of the Imperial Metals-owned Mount Polley copper and gold mine tailings pond in central British Columbia, has been called one of the biggest environmental disasters in modern Canadian history. It was one year ago today the mine's tailings pond breached, spilling 10 million cubic metres of sludge into nearby waterways.

A year later, Imperial Metals has completed "Phase One" of the clean up, and the mine is gearing up to get back into a partial reopening.

Kanahus Manuel is not happy about that.

She's one of the organizers of a protest rally at the gates of Mount Polley today.

Meanwhile, in Williams Lake, there's another rally later today in support of the mine.

Mayor Walt Cobb is part of that demonstration.
