Kettle Island bridge: Chiarelli says 'no'
Ottawa-Carleton's regional chair says he's not going to support the construction of an inter-provincial bridge at Kettle Island.
"We've made it very clear. Our council, and me as regional chair, that there will not be a bridge at Kettle Island," says Bob Chiarelli.
Chiarelli says people living in Ottawa's Manor Park don't want a bridge running through their neighbourhood.
Quebec's minister of transport, Guy Chevrette, supports the Kettle Island site.
The mayor of Gatineau and the MNA for Chapleau are also pushing for the proposal.
But Chiarelli says he'd prefer to put a bridge further down the Ottawa River near Cumberland and Masson-Angers.
"A compromise solution must be reached, which perhaps will not include Kettle Island or Cumberland-Masson. The minister of Transport for Quebec cannot make this happen on his own. We all have to be at the table at the same time working cooperatively, or it's not going to happen," says the regional chair.
Chiarelli says he's willing to meet with municipal leaders in Quebec to come up with a compromise.
