A 20-year-old Kitchener man faces arson and mischief charges after an early Saturday morning break-in and fire at a chalet owned by the Chicopee Ski Club on Morrison Road.

Suspect allegedly trashed a chalet on Morrison Rd before setting fire to the building

A 20-year-old Kitchener man faces a number of charges after allegedly breaking into a chalet on Morrison Road owned by the Chicopee Ski Club and setting fire to the building.

"The damage estimate is about $23,000, and it's mostly connected to smoke from the fire," police spokesman Olaf Heinzel said, noting the rest of the damage was from "items being smashed."

Police say they were tipped off through an early Saturday morning phone call from someone who noticed the chalet had a broken window.

Once officers arrived, they saw a man trying to escape the area and chased him down on foot.

The 20 year-old Kitchener man was eventually caught and arrested for breaking and entering, arson and drug possession.

The Chicopee Ski Club said the break-in and fire will have no effect on its opening day, which is Dec. 13.
