Basketball super league part of an 'evolution' for KW Titans

More fans. More national exposure. More pay.

The new Basketball Super League aims to give smaller, local teams like the KW Titans a leg up.

It was created to help serve the needs of those smaller teams across the country and in the U.S., giving them exposure to new basketball fans who live outside markets typically served by the NBA.

The new super league was created by The Basketball League (TBL), which is an organization dedicated to empowering community basketball teams.

David Magley, the president of TBL, said the super league will help teams like the KW Titans reach markets outside of major media centres like New York or Toronto.

"These are going to be markets that are flyover markets that we can be really big deals in," Magely said. "I think there's a lot of national companies that want access to them, but it's expensive — so they spend all their money in the national media hubs instead of the other markets that are crying out for some love as well."

He said there will also be longer seasons that start on Boxing Day and continue through May.

"Because we own another league, we're able to add more home games and away games. So from a business standpoint, we're able to build something that is totally unique to pro-sports up in North America," Magley explained.

These longer seasons are meant to give teams a better chance to acquire sponsorships, sell tickets and make more revenue.

Stepping stone to amalgamation for KW Titans

Magley said at this point, the KW Titans are not being amalgamated into a larger league — but that could change in a few weeks.

"We're absolutely in discussion of the evolution of what that league [KW Titans] looks like as well as teams through our league and TBL," he said. "It really has to do with them [KW Titans] seeing the operating agreements and finalizing the discussions."

David Schooley, the owner of the KW Titans said the new super league makes a break even position "more likely" in the KW Titans' future.

"We're excited about exploring that option," Schooley said. "We're absolutely working on it. It's a great evolution to bring basketball to the masses."
