Waterloo regional police have confirmed the body of a female was found Monday evening along the banks of the Grand River in Kitchener.

Police say emergency services responded to the area of Old Mill Road, where an OPP helicopter spotted the body in the river.

Regional police and OPP, along with the fire departments from Cambridge and Kitchener, all attended the scene.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the person and say without results from a postmortem they cannot confirm whether it's one of the two women reported to have been seen in distress on the Grand River on Saturday night.

Officers are continuing to search for the women after they received reports of two people in distress on the river near King Street E. and River Road E. on Saturday night.

Police say an eye witness saw the women using a "side-by-side personal flotation device" that was observed "deflated in the churning water." That vessel has yet to be located.

Insp. Matt Halliday said that given the duration of the search and length of time the two women have been missing, "we are treating this as a recovery effort."

The search for two women who were seen in distress on the Grand River Saturday night continues. Officers with Waterloo Regional Police Service provided an update on the case on Monday near the area where they were reported to have disappeared near King Street E. and River Road E.

The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a reminder to people to "exercise extreme caution" on or near the Grand River and other lakes, rivers and streams in the watershed this week.

"Water levels and flows in rivers and streams throughout the watershed are elevated. The forecasted rain, combined with isolated thunderstorms, will increase water levels further," the statement said.

"Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard," the statement added.

"Parents are reminded to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses. Recreational users on local waterways should be aware of the current conditions and exercise additional caution."
