A new elementary school in Breslau has received funding approval from the province.

The school will be located at 95 Loxleigh Lane. The province has approved $32.5 million for the kindergarten to Grade 8 school, which will have 611 student spaces and a four-room child care centre with space up to 73 children up to the age of four.

Scott Miller, the Waterloo Region District School Board's director of education, said in a release that the funding will go to building "a modern, inclusive learning environment and child care facility that will serve students, families and the Breslau community for generations to come."

Maedith Radlein, chair of the board of trustees, said the funding is vital to address the needs of the growing community.

Breslau is just east of Kitchener and is where the Region of Waterloo International Airport is located. It opened a new library branch in September 2024. In June 2024, a new GO station was announced for the community. During that announcement, Mayor Sandy Shantz noted the Township Woolwich is projected to grow by almost 50 per cent by 2050.

Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris noted in his own release that Breslau is one of the fastest growing communities in Waterloo region and a new school there "prioritizes the needs of local families."

The school, currently referred to as Breslau-Hopewell Crossing Elementary School, will undergo a boundary review to determine which students will attend it and a new name will be chosen.

The school was part of an announcement in 2022 about three new schools to be build in Waterloo region. The Hopewell Crossing subdivision is expected to grow to more than 4,100 people by 2031.
