A 30-year-old Cambridge man has been arrested and charged in connection with the overdose death of an inmate at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton earlier this year.

Halton Regional Police say they were called to the jail on May 7 after six inmates reportedly overdosed on illicit drugs.

Five of the six inmates were transported to hospital and recovered, but police say the sixth inmate did not survive.

An investigation revealed the inmate's death was caused by the consumption of fentanyl and carfentanil, police say.

Police say a Maplehurst inmate has been arrested and charged for his role in the death.

The Cambridge man is facing charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and trafficking of a schedule I substance.

Police say the man will next appear in court Nov. 14.
