Patients at Cambridge Memorial Hospital will now be able to access their medical records easily and safely, through a new online portal.

The hospital now joins a network of other medical facilities across southern Ontario who also use the MyChart portal, which gives patients access to thier own medical information including medications, discharge summaries and pathology reports.

"Allowing them to easily access information means that they can [be] true partners in deciding how to navigate their care," Liane Barefoot, director of patient experience, quality and risk at the hospital told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo.

Research has shown that patients who have access and read their doctors visit notes tend to have a better understanding of their own health and may even be more likely to take their medications as prescribed.

Barefoot said the portal is already in use at their medical day care clinic as they continue to train staff and prepare for expansion to the whole facility.
