The female swan that has joined Otis the swan in Kitchener's Victoria Park now has a name after a public vote.

A female swan now living in Kitchener's Victoria Park with long-time bachelor swan Otis has a new name.

It's Ophelia.

The public were invited to suggest names for the female swan, and received 1,800 suggestions. From that, the top five choices were put to a public vote.

People could rank the names in order of preference: Ophelia, Odette, Olivia, Victoria and Olive.

To the disappointment of at least two people who responded to the City of Kitchener on Twitter, Swany McSwanface did not make the list.

Otis, who has lived alone since his previous partner died in 2012, spends his winters in Stratford with other swans from the Avon River. It provides him with access to food and water.

He met his new mate this past winter and on April 5, Otis and the female swan returned to Kitchener.

Since their return, other swans have been seen in the park.

City staff have also reminded people not to feed bread to the swans or ducks in the park.

"Feeding them food, such as bread, can cause a variety of health issues," the city said in a tweet.

Since Otis and his companion returned to Victoria Park, several other trumpeter swans have congregated there. The city reminds people not to feed any of the waterfowl at the park. (Jackie Sharkey/CBC)
