New Hamburg to get updated flood zone mapping as part of new GRCA study
A $90K grant from federal government to make up half of project's funding
The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) says it will be conducting a flood mitigation study in New Hamburg after it received a $90,000 grant from the federal government.
The GRCA applied to the federal National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP) in September 2018 after having several discussions with Township of Wilmot staff and New Hamburg residents following significant flooding events that year.
The overall cost of the study is estimated to be $180,000. The NDMP grant is set to cover half of the cost, while GRCA will cover the rest through its land sales reserves.
The study will provide updated flood zone mapping of the area and preliminary options to mitigate flood risks along the Nith River in New Hamburg.
It will also provide estimated average of flood damage in the area and the feasibility of potential mitigation options.
The GRCA says it will host two public information sessions on the study starting late spring or early summer.
