A Guelph teen has been arrested after a bomb threat shut down a high school in that city Monday morning.

John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute moved classes online for the day, Heather Loney, a spokesperson for the Upper Grand District School Board, said in an email.

School officials were made aware of the threat early Monday morning.

"We take all of these situations very seriously, and immediately contacted Guelph police," Loney said.

"The safety and well-being of students is always our number one concern and the top concern of all our staff members."

Officers with the Guelph Police Service went to the school Monday morning, police spokesperson Scott Tracey told CBC News.

"Our tactics and rescue unit officers and assistance from OPP K9 unit are currently in the school doing a full search of the building," Tracey said.

"At this point we're not aware of anything that suggests that this is an actual, credible bomb incident."

Just after 11 a.m., Guelph police lifted the hold and secure at the school, but Loney said given the time of day, educators and students will continue with remote learning.

"The school itself is open for administrative and custodial staff. The school will be open as normal tomorrow," Loney said.

The 14-year-old from Guelph was found and arrested Monday afternoon. The teen was charged with public mischief and two counts of uttering threats. The youth has been released and given an upcoming court date.

Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact Guelph police or Crime Stoppers.
