Guelph police warn scam emails, calls not from Canada Revenue Agency
Guelph police are warning residents about scam emails and calls that claim to be from the Canada Revenue Agency, but are actually attempts to extract personal information and money from the recipients.
It's the latest city to report the fraudulent CRA scam to show up.
According to police, the emails usually contain a link that says it will send the reader to the CRA website, but instead redirects to an online form where people are asking for personal information and banking information.
Malware threat
Guelph Police say the bogus emails may also contain malware, malicious software embedded into the document that can compromise your computer or mobile device, and steal your personal information.
Often malware will discover your passwords and personal information, and secretly send it to unauthorized recipients.
Police say that during the phone calls, the person or people making the call threatens the listener with an imaginary debt to the CRA by claiming it's the result of failing to file taxes. The caller then attempts to bully or scare the recipient into paying that debt.
Police say residents should ignore the calls and emails, and report them to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre here.
