Evidence "consistent with illicit drug production" has been seized from the scene of a house explosion in Kitchener, police say.

The house explosion Wednesday evening after 11:30 p.m. sent two adults and two children to hospital.

Earlier on Friday, police had announced the Ontario Fire Marshal's office had deemed the explosion to be "criminal in nature."

Later on Friday, police said a search warrant was conducted at the home earlier in the day and the evidence was seized.

Emergency crews responded to a townhome complex in the area of Elm Ridge Drive and Queen's Boulevard just before midnight Wednesday after receiving reports of a house explosion.

A man and a woman were transported by paramedic services to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. Two children were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Waterloo regional police said the children have since been released from hospital, but the adults remain in hospital at this time.

The fire marshal, Waterloo regional police's general investigations unit, as well as its drugs and firearms unit, continue to investigate, police said in a release.

Police say criminal charges are anticipated as part of the investigation.
